Remembrance Day, Montreal, Quebec, Canada: 2009
Faces of Remembrance
Every year on November 11th, Canadians pause in a silent moment of remembrance for the people who have served in the Canadian and Allied Defence forces during times of war and conflict, who continue to serve in Canada´s peace keeping missions. They honour those who fought for freedom and democracy in the First World War (1914-1918), the Second World War (1939-1945), and the Korean War (1950-1953). They remember those who have been injured and those who died in the wars. They also honour the Canadian soldiers currently serving throughout the world.
For most of us, war is distant, seen through the lens of a television camera with information from a photojournalist´s commentary. It does not touch us. In these photographs, the people look directly at the camera to communicate their remembrance to you. It is a silent but powerful message. ¨We remember them¨.
These portraits were taken in Montreal in 2008 and 2009.
