Remembrance Day, Montreal, Quebec, Canada: 20008
Remembrance Day, Montreal, Quebec, Canada: 20008.
Every year on November 11, Canadians pause in a silent moment of remembrance for the many people who have served, during times of war, conflict and peace.
They honour those who fought for Canada in the First World War (1914-1918), the Second World War (1939-1945), and Korean War (1914-1953). More than 1,600,000 have died during those wars. They also honour those Canadian soldiers who are currently overseas.
These portraits of women and men in the streets of Montreal were taken between 2008 and 2009. I asked these people to look directly at my camera because for most of us, war is seen through the lens of a television camera or a photojournalist’s account of fighting in distant parts of the world. So that those that looked at my camera communicate to those looking at the photos remembrance for what we did and what we are still doing, since still in 2010, 2500 Canadian soldiers are fighting in Afghanistan.
